How to take care of your Dental Implants?
Dental implants are now a popular procedure option to replace missing teeth among adults. Implants can also be used to help sustain a denture for convenience and function. According to the AAID, 3 million people have implants, and that number is increasing by 500,000 a year. To assure the longevity of an implant, specific methods and efforts are required to keep it clean and free of bacteria and plaque,
Dental implants are certainly the most natural way of restoring lost teeth, but just like your real teeth, they require care to stay healthy. Below are a few tips:
- Careful brushing of the gum edge with your regular toothbrush manual or electric – ideally with medium / soft bristles and a small head.
- Regular cleaning of the space between your implant teeth with a suitably sized interproximal brush. This type of brush should be accurately sized so that gentle pressure is needed to drive the brush in and out of the area, i.e., not so ample that extreme force is needed, but not so small that no resistance is felt.
- Dental visits are required at regular intervals, either every 3 or 6 months. It also depends on your risk of gum disease. At Shubhdin Dental Clinic, we advise which is appropriate.
Removable Denture users
If your implants are supporting a detachable denture, the surface (inside) should be cleaned each day thoroughly to remove the layer of bacteria, which will develop while your denture is being worn. A separate soft toothbrush is needed, and a small amount of detergent to wash up liquid and brushed all over the outside of the denture, then wholly rinsed.
Regular dental visits
Whichever type of implant surgery you have, the implants and supporting teeth should be checked either by your professional dentists or implantologists or your regular dentist at least annually.
Signs of implant infection or wear of the restoration can often be most completely treated when detected early.
Implant disease is much more prevalent in smokers and diabetics as well as those with gum infection and those who do not pay attention to mouth hygiene. So a healthy oral lifestyle will undoubtedly reduce your chance of implant condition.
All the above information will assist in ensuring that you enjoy the benefits of your implant teeth for many years to come. Should you have concerns at any stage, please do not hesitate to contact us.
